Principal shareholder-director companies excel in talent management and technology

- Deloitte announces 50 best managed principal shareholder-director companies in the Netherlands -

Rotterdam, 6 March 2008 – For the first time, Deloitte selected the top scoring 50 companies in the ‘Building the Best’ competition for principal shareholder-director companies. These companies, managed by a principal shareholder-director, scored highest in financial management, talent management and the use of technology, the jury said. The fifty nominated companies may carry their honorary title ‘50 Dutch Best Managed Companies 2008’ for one year.  The management teams of the winning principal shareholder-director companies will be celebrated at a formal dinner on 4 June 2008.

The jury concluded in its preliminary report that Dutch principal shareholder-director companies score high in financial management, recruitment and retention of talent, and clever use of technology solutions. Low to average scores were achieved in risk management, strategic alliances, and leadership coaching. The winning companies will receive specialist feedback from Deloitte experts on both strong and weak points.

An independent jury led by the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands, Thijs Wöltgens, selected the 50 best managed companies in the Netherlands for the first time. Some 150 principal shareholder-director companies participated in the competition ‘Building the Best’, a joint initiative of Deloitte and the Chamber of Commerce Netherlands, Nyenrode Business University, Stichting Ondernemersklankbord, and VNO-NCW, the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers.

In contrast with other management awards, ‘Building the Best’ addresses principal shareholder-director non-listed companies with more than 50 employees and sales of at least EUR 10 million in all sectors of industry. The award ‘Best managed company’ is an award for the whole company, not just for the shareholder-director himself. Apart from measuring sales and growth, the jury assessed the planning and implementation of strategic policies. The programme ‘Building the Best’ is a Deloitte initiative to focus attention and gain recognition for the best managed principal shareholder-director companies in the Netherlands.

Deloitte Canada has held such competitions for the last 15 years. In their experience, the companies who were awarded the title ‘best managed company’ benefitted from the positive spin-off of the award both in value of the company and in employee satisfaction.
